Megeve was one of the earliest ski resorts to be created, often referred to as a French alternative to St Moritz. Based on a thirteenth century village, it is a fabulously unique place with cobbled streets creating a romantic atmosphere. Its ambience and altitude places it in a different sort of plane to most other resorts and centres in it's history.
It gives skiers access to one of the most largest lift-linked ski areas and a lift pass that includes neighbouring Chamonix. Equally significant, the range of shopping, restaurants and activities is said to surpass all other French resorts. Something of a bold claim, one might say but the reasons why support this, evidently.
The famous Ski Club de Paris which is managed by Austrian instructors, opened in 1932 and at Rochebrune where the area's skiing actually began it opened a cable car in 1933. The resort was undisputed as the most chic in France in the swinging sixties up to the 1980's where Courchevel rivalled. Now that skiing is no longer the only focal point in resorts, Megeve is back in renaissance.
It may have a pretty and rustic atmosphere but Megeve is most certainly a modern resort. Its bright lights and ever present heartbeat of music beats out when the sun goes down. Many clubs don't start till after midnight ensuring more than enough time to eat well and drink well in the abundance of bars and restaurants available. If you prefer a more laid back evening, you can sit back with a cocktail or two at the casino which has been recently redecorated. Megeve is also home to one of the world's best spas, Les Fermes de Marie.
In the 25km of Megeve there are so many ways to entertain yourselves. Besides skiing and snowboarding which caters for all levels, you can indulge in dog sledding, paragliding and a whole other range of extreme winter sport activities. There's also paintballing and scenic trails to walk. The list is endless and conclusively, Megeve offers an excellent resort for facilities, boasting highly rated childcare so that the option is there if you want to explore the nightlife or dine out in the spectacular Michelin-starred establishments. The epitome of chic and luxury, it may be a pricey affair, but unforgettable to say the least.
